1991, Lohja. I was in the fine arts major and our class's weekend trip was to Sammatti, Oravannokka, Finland. In time, the owner Lietsalo bequeathed his tilus to the municipality of Lohja, with the idea of using it for poor artists.
A couple of kilometers before arriving to the place, I already started telling the driver what was coming next. When we arrived at the yard, the buildings were in their right places, but they looked completely different than in my dream. The houses in my dream had red walls and white frames. Today, the buildings are completely different colors and shapes.
I proudly told everyone how I know the route to the sauna on the beach. In my dream, I had asked the three Ahti (mythological water creature or God in Finland) for 'more'. They all (there should only be one) asked what 'more' do I need because I already have everything. I got married that year and the following year we bought a house. My paintings also brought food to the table. Really no 'more' was needed. I made a radio program about Lietsalo for YLE (Finnish national tv- and radio broadcasting company) and interviewed the service personnel who were still alive at the time. Oravannokka was used to provide 'countryside holiday' for poor urban youth in the 1950s, when Lietsalo was still alive. The interviewees showed me photographs where the buildings were similar to the ones in my dream. Red and white.
